Dates: Thursday 14th April 2011
Times: 10.15am to 3.30pm
Course Leaders: Dr Mamata Parhi, WISERD Swansea
Location: WISERD Training Room, 46 Park Place, Cardiff University
Outline
The aim of this workshop is to introduce the widely used and powerful methodological tools of Social Network Analysis. The workshop begins with a general introduction to the distinct goals and perspectives of network analysis, followed by a practical discussion of network data, covering issues of data entry, visualization of datasets, transformation of datasets and mathematical/computer representation. We then take up the methods of detection and description of structural properties, such as centrality, cohesion, subgroups, etc. The training will also introduce the software package UCINET along with its built-in network visualisation software (NETDRAW).
The workshop will cover:
- The importance of SNA and its applicability across disciplines
- Basic philosophy and principles of SNA
- Operational details of SNA methodology
- Simple analysis of network data using UCINET and NETDRAW
This workshop should be of interest to staff from a range of academic disciplines as SNA is a cross-cutting methodological tool and is increasingly being applied in social sciences.
