Overview
Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) is hosting this geospatial metadata workshop at the University of Cardiff.
EDINA, a JISC based data centre based at the University of Edinburgh, is offering this workshop to introduce geospatial metadata, online Go-Geo! resources, and the open and closed versions of ShareGeo, a spatial data repository. Workshop participants will also be introduced to a range of accessible web sources for spatial data.
The workshop is part an effort to introduce and promote online resources to support research and teaching and learning activities as well as spatial data management and sharing across the UK higher and further education communities. The workshop will also provide an overview of the European Commission’s INSPIRE Directive, which was transposed into UK law in December 2009, and applies to the UK academic community, and now requires the creation of metadata for spatial datasets.
The geospatial metadata workshop activities will include a 45 minute presentation of the following:
- geospatial metadata and standards (ISO 19115, INSPIRE and UK GEMINI 2)
- the benefits of metadata
- Go-Geo! resources for metadata creation and publication
- ShareGeo spatial data repository
- web sources for spatial data
and a one hour hands-on session for workshop participants to use the
- Go-Geo! Portal
- Geodoc Metadata Editor Tool
- ShareGeo Spatial Data Repository
Geodoc and the Digimap Service version of ShareGeo can be accessed through the UK Access Management Federation (Shibboleth) authentication service. Please have your username and password for the workshop.
Workshop participants interested in creating metadata are encouraged to bring information for their spatial datasets, which can be entered into the Geodoc metadata editor tool’s form. Recommended dataset information to bring includes the following:
- Title
- Abstract describing the dataset
- The north, south, east and west co-ordinate (decimal degrees) extents of the area which the dataset covers
- Dates when information was captured for dataset or date when dataset published
- Scale or resolution
- File format (eg: ArcGIS shapefile)
- Lineage
Workshop participants will also be offered a 15-minute break with refreshments.
