Overview
The course introduces a variety of quantitative methods, from simple descriptive statistics to techniques for analysing different types of quantitative data and covers the use of SPSS as an analytical tool. The course provides a broad overview of the ways in which quantitative data is analysed. Upon completion of the course you will be able to do some analysis yourself as well as giving you the ability to understand and to critique the quantitative research of others.
Session 1: Introduces the most basic quantitative concepts, from different types of variables, descriptive statistics such as mean, median, mode etc. The course then moves onto a session on the computer introducing the basics of SPSS. In this session you will learn how to enter data, define variables and produce simple statistics and frequency charts.
Session 2: Moves on to look at hypotheses, significance, different types of experimental design and the appropriate statistical tests. You will be directed to appropriate data sets and have an opportunity to critique journal articles which use quantitative methods and again will use SPSS to look at different types of analysis.
