Overview

“The connection between health and the dwellings of the population is one of the most important that exists”
Florence Nightingale 1865

Wales still has the unenviable combination of some of the poorest housing conditions in the UK and the worst health indicators. Tackling homelessness and bad housing should therefore be a key part of the health and well being agenda in Wales.

This conference will examine and discuss cost effective, innovative and practical ways of addressing poor housing conditions to help improve health and reduce poverty.

A central part of the conference will be the presentation of a Shelter Cymru-commissioned report by the Building Research Establishment. This report quantifies the costs of poor housing to the NHS in Wales and demonstrates the cost benefit of real housing interventions by local authorities.
