Training and Capacity Building

Training and research capacity building is central to the activity of WISERD and organised to maximise the benefit of the broad range of its component disciplines and their related research methodologies. Training and research capacity building activities are used by WISERD:

  • To support the development of inter-institutional research teams through methodological development
  • To improve research capacity among public organisations and other stakeholders
  • To address identified deficits in quantitative skills in Wales and beyond

These aims were articulate in response to recognition that the most detailed and complex problems facing society in the twenty first century call for investigation and analysis based upon the interdisciplinary social sciences (Rhind Commission, 2009)

WISERD’s training and research capacity building activities are intended to complement and build upon the team’s extensive experience of training and capacity building.  This strategy draws upon the work carried out in the report of the ESRC/HEFCW scoping study: Quantitative Methods Capacity Building in Wales (Moore et al. 2007) as well as the NCRM Report on a Consultation Exercise to Identify the Research Needs in Research Methods in the UK Social Sciences (Bardsley et al. 2006), and the NCRM Assessment of Training Needs Final Report (Wiles et al. 2005).

Management

The programme is being steered by three strategic groups

  • an overarching TCB group chaired by Professor Howard Davis (Bangor University)
  • a quantitative methods training and capacity building strategy group chaired by Professor David Blackaby (Swansea University)
  • a qualitative methods training and capacity building strategy group chaired by Professor Amanda Coffey (Cardiff University)
