Knowing Localities

The localities research programme comprises a series of locality studies being carried out by six full-time researchers (two each based in Aberystwyth, Bangor, and Cardiff Universities).

These studies are complemented by a suite of projects – ‘Local knowledge in Context’ (KLIC), employing three researchers at Cardiff University, and undertaking qualitative micro-locality and place-based studies.

The Locality Research Programme (LRP) has five key roles in WISERD.  These are:

1. Providing a way of researching the imagined and material experiences of stakeholders and communities.
2. Examining the processes and practices of devolution in sub-national settings.
3. Acting as an interface with policy stakeholders in different parts of Wales.
4. Gaining a unique research and policy insight through mixed methods and integrated spatial data concerns.
5. Contributing to methodological development and research capacity building.

The locality research team works closely with and alongside the data integration and public policy teams.

Collectively, WISERD is seeking to ‘grasp’ the social and economic geographies of contemporary Wales, in and through quantitative and qualitative data, and at micro, meso and macro levels.

In addition to the above, three ‘Local Knowledge in Context’ (KliC) projects have been running since the start of 2009, focused on detailed and ethnographic explorations of locality, place and the articulation of local knowledges. The projects are being utilized to explore different perceptions of locality, the ways in which place-embedded experience impacts upon local knowledges, the relations between local and other forms of knowledge, and the ways in which knowledges are represented in everyday social worlds and spaces.
