Data Integration and Data Management
One of the principal objectives of the WISERD Data Integration strand is to create a framework and platform for collaborative research taking place across WISERD based on the collection, management, analysis, dissemination and discovery of primary and secondary quantitative and qualitative data sets for Wales.
The primary focus of the theme is the development of a collaborative virtual research environment and associated tools and resources to aid collective working and data sharing across Wales. This will act as a gateway to information “by channeling all searches through a single geoportal containing a single catalog” (Goodchild et al., 2007; p. 255).
The geoportal will support social science researchers by providing a platform for integrating, managing and disseminating quantitative and qualitative socio-economic data in Wales. This will be the hub around which other Data Integration activities will develop and a primary focus of our preliminary research efforts has concerned initial investigations into geo-portal development using free and open source (FOSS) software.
