Professor Amanda Coffey

Role: Amanda is a member of the WISERD training and capacity building steering group, has oversight of the methods briefing series and collaborates with WISERD colleagues on the development of research projects. Amanda was a founding co-director of WISERD.

Biography

Amanda joined Cardiff University in 1990, and has been a Professor in the Cardiff School of Social Sciences since 2006. She is currently Deputy Director of the School. Amanda was Director of the Cardiff Node of the ESRC National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM) Qualitative Research Methods in the Social Sciences: Innovation, Integration and Impact (QUALITI) (2005-8). Qualiti focused on methodological development, training and capacity building in qualitative research methods. Amanda is currently an editor of Sociology, and is also an executive editor of the British Journal of Sociology of Education. She has recently edited, with Tom Hall, a three volume set on Researching Young People (London: Sage)

Research Interests

Amanda’s research interests include young people and social change, the sociology of education, working lives and qualitative methods and approaches. Amanda has led and been involved in a number of funded projects that have focused on qualitative research methods and methodological development, including work on data archiving, digital and multi-modal methods, visual ethics and enhancing research capacity. .

Amanda’s empirical research has also included work on youth transitions, changing communities, youth work, citizenship education, occupational socialisation, and gender and equality in education and work.
