Biography

Prior to joining WISERD in 2009 Robin has previously held positions at the Oxford Institute of Ageing, University of Oxford, where he is now an associate fellow, and before that at the Department of Sociology, University of Bristol.

Research Interests

Robin’s main research interests are in the field of ethnicity and nationalism, with a particular focus on understanding the way concepts of nation, identity, state and ‘the national’ relate to the lived experiences of ordinary people. Other specific interests include: forms of activism, participation and conflict in relation to community, place and locality; intergenerational relationships; and the lived experiences of migrants and minorities.

Current Research

Robin is a member of the “Localities” research team. Other currently projects include ‘Public sentiments towards immigrants and minorities’ (Principal applicant, funded by the Welsh Government, 2010) and ‘Grandparenthood in bilingual families in Wales’ (Co-applicant funded by the Leverhulme Trust, 2010-12) which is a comparative study of intergenerational cultural transmissions within Welsh-speaking and Italian families in Wales. He is also currently working on a book and articles (with Steve Fenton) on national identity, class and resentment in England.
